Family bike tour to Chorinsky-Klause
Through the Weißenbachtal
We start at the tourist information office in Bad Goisern, drive past the Protestant church over the Goiserer bridge and then turn off at the "Gasthof Chorinskyklause" (restaurant) at the junction towards "Hanusch-Hof" (Resztaurant). We follow the Traun (name of the river), pass the "Oberhauser Schottergrube" and reach the district of "Weißenbach" via the wildlife trail. Here we turn left onto "Untere Weißenbachstraße" (street name). The forest road splits, we keep to the right on the lower path, the so-called Dürrenstraße, which runs gravelled on the left bank of the "Weißenbach" (name of the river). At junctions, we follow the hiking trail signs to the "Chorinsky Klause"; moderately steep ascents lead deeper and deeper into the forest, into the side valley of the Dürrenbach and back high above the Weißenbach valley.
Then it continues flat to the small clearing of the Brunntalalm with three wooden huts. Here we turn left, cross the Weißenbach and come to a junction. To the right, we could bike about two kilometers further slightly uphill towards Traunbachau.
Where the Emperor Invited to Dinner
However, our route leads at the junction to the left onto a gently sloping forest road on the right side of the valley. This is where the Brunntalalm is located, where you can stop for a snack in summer. After 300m we reach a small turn-off to the left to the Kaisertisch and the "Chorinsky Klause", the last functional wooden hermitage in Austria. The purpose of the "Chorinsky-Klause" was to dam up the Weißenbach during the timber harvesting season. When the felled timber was to be removed, the sluices of the dam were suddenly opened, and the tidal wave washed the tree trunks out into the Traun, from where they could be easily transported on. From the Klause, however, we stay on the forest road high to the right above the Weißenbach valley, which takes us back to the "Gasthaus Chorinskyklause" at the entrance to the Weißenbach valley on a mostly gentle slope with beautiful views.
Best in autumn
For those who have some time, it is recommended to wait for autumn on this tour. Especially between the end of September and the end of October, when the forest in the "Weissenbachtal" (Weissenbach Valley) plays all its colours, this bike tour is a uniquely beautiful mountain bike tour. Time to take a deep breath and relax. Pure nature and lots of silence.
